Within this section of the assignment I will be explaining the different psychological approaches to health and social care practice. Behaviourist Approach The Behaviourist theory states that human behaviour is learnt in most cases from experience.

In terms of the application of this approach to health care practice this can be reflected in many methods. One method would be using desensitisation treatment to overcome phobias. This is a type of behavioural therapy that aims to remove the fear response of a phobia.

They will learn breathing exercises and muscle relaxation techniques. The next step would be to create a hierarchy of fear that begins with a stimulus that creates the least fear and builds up to a stimulus that creates the most fear.

The hierarchy of fear is crucial when it comes to therapy as it helps with the structure of the sessions.

In each session the goal could be to overcome each level of the hierarchy of fear starting at the lowest level. The patient will repeatedly imagine the situation until they are no longer afraid of the situation.

This will suggest that the therapy has been successful and is no longer needed. In terms of social care, the behaviourist approach can be applied using operant conditioning.

One example of this is getting job seekers to comply with the government. Operant conditioning could also be used as a way getting children to perform well in school.

Good behaviour would result in getting gold stars. Social Learning Approach The social learning theory states that behaviour can be learnt from others; therefore its main focus is observational learning.

Social learning can be used in the health sector through the use of positive health campaigners. One positive health campaigner is Jamie Oliver, he is well known for his campaign of heathy foods in schools and hospitals.

According to Melamed Et Al ; Children scheduled for operations had reduced anxiety after watching films of the operation. Another example of this would be the training of junior doctors and other health professionals. The junior doctors would learn how to carry out procedures effectively so that when they actually become doctors they will know how to do this.

The social learning theory has been extremely influential in social care; in particular the use of positive role models to change behaviour.Feb 29,  · P2: Provide an explanation of the different psychological approaches to health care practice.
